You’ve probably seen it a dozen times: Tom Cruise waves his hands in front of a blank, glassy screen, and it whirs to life with glowing data and graphics. This vision, from the 2001 Steven Spielberg movie Minority Report, is classic UX bait. As the first genuine plastic, Bakelite revolutionized the everyday culture from the 1920s to the 1950s. On view at the MAK from July 15 through October 26, ‘Bakelite: The Georg Kargl Collection’ exhibition is devoted to this extraordinary raw material.
