In Design: GC18, David Knowles – Furniture News

During a visit to Northern Ireland, David Knowles encountered the Giant’s Causeway, a volcanic landscape in which interlocking hexagonal columns of black basalt rise dramatically from the ocean. Inspired by this natural feature, David created GC18, a bespoke coffee table that fuses sculptural elements with functional design.

“Four hundred cast Jesmonite hexagons represent the causeway’s 40,000 basalt columns, replicating their aesthetic qualities and majestic flowing forms,” says David. “A regulated pattern with equal spacing emphasises the individual character of each hexagon, yet combines them into a single entity with defined multifaceted levels. Supported by a minimalist blackened steel frame, the outer hexagons overhang, adding depth and intrigue.

The Best Paint Colors for 2020, According to Interior Designers – Good Housekeeping

One of the easiest ways to update your home is by swiping on a fresh coat of paint. No matter which room you’re in — the bedroom, kitchen, or bath — adding a new color to your walls or furniture is a cheap and commitment-free way to make an eye-catching change. And because paint is totally reversible, it’s also one of the best ways to incorporate some of the latest interior design trends into your home every few years.

If you’re ready to make a major change this year, look no further than the top paint colors of 2020, which run the gamut from bubbly blush to earthy clay. To find these paint ideas, we asked interior designers which colors they expected to see in abundance in the new year. Whether your style is modern or traditional, minimalist or extravagant, there’s a 2020 paint color for you. And if you need even more low-cost ways to revamp your space, try one of these DIY home decor projects.

Design Trends – Upcycling, Recycling and Reclaimed Furniture – House Shop

At one time, the idea of second-hand furniture was that it was great if you were into antiques or you couldn’t afford something new.  But more recently, a number of factors have led to a growing trend in design – upcycling, recycling and the use of reclaimed furniture.  But what’s the trend about and how can you find products for your home within it?

Upcycling versus recycling

At their heart, recycling and upcycling are very similar – the reuse of something either for the same or a different purpose.  Upcycling is often called ‘creative reuse’ because there’s a greater emphasis on using something in new and interesting ways.  It also looks to fix up something that might be broken or damaged so that it can be useful again while still retaining the original character of the item – not trying to make it brand new and perfect once more.

Bespoke Fabric Design Made Easy – blackswan

Global Upholstery Solutions and Panaz have long shared a strong relationship and have collaborated on various projects over the years. We were therefore delighted when our Account Manager, the wonderful June George, visited us to introduce ReMake, a new piece of design technology developed by Panaz. This progression in technology is extremely exciting for designers, generating endless possibilities for us and resolving design dilemmas that may arise on projects and the exact reason why we created blackswan. Panaz describes ReMake as a ‘turning point in bespoke fabric design. By putting the ability to recolour and rework any Panaz print design directly into your hands’

We liked the idea and so wnert about creating a similar idea for our industry. It isn’t the first and won’t be the last, but we liked the idea and thought others would too. But, what to call it?

We came up with the name The Thread during a brainstorm, liked it and went with it.

Then, just before we released the second one, we happened to be looking for something in our email chain from Panaz and came across their digest – Threads. Whether sub-consciously or coincidentally, we had come up with the same name for roughly the same thing. We like to think it was a case of ‘great minds thinking alike’ but Panaz got there first, so we’ll change ours.

Having come up with the original name it was hard to find a new one that measured up – but we’ve finally found something that was relevant and we were happy with.

The Top Stitch.

We hope you enjoyed the first episode of TDFKA The Thread and we hope you enjoy the second episode of The Top Stitch!

“The design fraternity is absolutely a target for us, because designers build the world,” MacArthur told Dezeen. “So they’re an absolutely vital fraternity in designing something that fits within the [circular] system.”

COLOUR SOAKED SPACES – Mad About The House

I wanted, this week, to look at some deeply colour saturated rooms. While I may not use lots of different shades in one room – tending to variations of around three with an occasional fourth thrown in – that’s not to say that I don’t love deeply colour soaked rooms. And here are some that I found this week.

2019 marked the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, the early 20th century art and design movement founded by architect Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany. One of the most influential members of the time was Hungarian-born artist László Moholy-Nagy, who eventually landed in Chicago and founded mid-century design school, The New Bauhaus. Top 8 Workplace Trends for 2020 – Spacestor Insights

This year we’re taking a holistic view again. All of our trends are interconnected. They all affect one another, and can all be combined into a great workplace. Here are our Top 8 Workplace Trends for 2020.

One of the recurring themes at hospitality shows and conferences is what the Hotel of the Future will be like. On occasion actual mock-up guest rooms have been fabricated to demonstrate the kinds of environments we can expect to see in years to come.

These events and exercises are always fascinating and thought provoking but do tend to generate as many questions as they give answers. I suspect this is because no one can really predict with certainty what is likely to happen.

Spotlight for International Women’s Day 2020

March 8, 2020 by Lee Ness Leave a Comment

International Womens Day

Further to our general post on our women leaders on International Women’s Day 2020, we are spotlighting our Materials Manager, Lindsay Watson-Jones who manages all our Supplier Accounts for our Commercial Upholstery operations plus our Goods In and Despatch team and has just this week completed her CIPS Level 4 Qualification and is an inspirational figure for others.

Her’s the background on Lindsay from our International Women’s Day post

“After 15 years of working at Stannah Stairlifts, I made the leap to join another part of the Stannah Group, Global Upholstery Solutions Ltd. You’d think after all those years I’d know a bit about stairlift upholstery but there is way more to it than you think!
Working my way from Administrator, Supplier and Customer Account Management, I’m proud to be Global’s Materials Manager which includes Supplier Account Management and looking after our Goods In & Despatch teams.
There is a phrase ‘it’s a man’s world’ but in fact all my reports are male. We have mutual respect for one another and there is certainly no gender conflict. GUS believes if you’re right for the job and you do it well, you can achieve anything.”

After taking on the role of Supplier and Customer Account Management, Lindsay committed to the Commercial Procurement and Supply qualification which included a CIPS accreditation route. The CIPS accreditation arrived this week, just in time for International Women’s Day!

Here is Lindsay’s thoughts on the process:

“I didn’t like school much, I certainly didn’t like exams and still don’t! But courage, determination, and a lot of studying got me through the 5 exams I had to pass to gain my Level 4 Diploma in CIPS. I wont lie, I had a tear of relief and overwhelmed with  pride when the certificate landed on my doorstep.
At nearly 40 years old, I really didn’t think I was ready to go back to the classroom. But with guidance and confidence from my colleagues, I was sure to get through it and I did.
Not forgetting the team at SRSCC who deliver the training and mentoring through the Student Apprenticeship Scheme.
With this qualification and my new found skills, I am more confident in my role as Materials Manager at GUS. The knowledge gained with help me and my team successfully grow the efficiency of the business.”

Celebrating International Women’s Day 2020

March 8, 2020 by Lee Ness Leave a Comment

At Global Upholstery Solutions, we are proud that as a manufacturing company, we have an equal gender split in our management team and so, on International Women’s Day, we thought we would share a short piece on each of them.

The great polemicist Christopher Hitchens used to say, “There is a cure for poverty has a name, in fact. it’s called the empowerment of women.”

Obviously, Hitchens was talking about third world countries, but the point is worth noting on International Women’s Day 2020. Empowerment of women does great things in any society and is the key to any successful enterprise.

Here is a little on each of our amazing team.

Lia Branco – Head of Design

I gained my degree in Textiles & Surface Design at Buckinghamshire University in 2013 I then began my design career in print design within the fashion and accessories industry.
I joined GUS in 2017, originally as a Sewing Machinist but when the company needed to expand its design capability, my background allowed me to be promoted into that department as Global prefers to promote from within. Two years on, I now head the design department, specialising in  fabric design for both Global Upholstery Solutions and blackswan.

Lindsay Watson-Jones – Materials Manager

After 15 years of working at Stannah Stairlifts, I made the leap to join another part of the Stannah Group, Global Upholstery Solutions Ltd. You’d think after all those years I’d know a bit about stairlift upholstery but there is way more to it than you think!
Working my way from Administrator and Customer Account Management, I’m proud to be Global’s Materials Manager which includes Supplier Account Management and looking after our Goods In & Despatch teams.
There is a phrase ‘it’s a man’s world’ but in fact all my reports are male. We have mutual respect for one another and there is certainly no gender conflict. GUS believes if you’re right for the job and you do it well, you can achieve anything.

Steph Judge – Sales and Business Development Manager

I started off at Global Upholstery as a Production Operative which is where I learned each stage of the manufacturing process in upholstery. I am very fortunate to work for a company who treats males and females as equals. In 2016 I earned the opportunity to enhance my skill-set by offering me a new role as Improvement Coordinator. This led to another role as Customer Account Manager just 5 months later. I am now the Sales and Business Development Manager and working towards a degree in B2B sales.  Not in my wildest dreams did I think I could look after my family, work full time, and study but somehow I am achieving it! A big big thank you to Stannah family and organisation for supporting my education, I am truly grateful of the support and time you have given me which results in the person I am today.

Andrea Westley – Manufacturing Group Leader

After graduating with a 2:1 in Fashion Design I was offered a job as a sewing machinist, 2 years later an opportunity arose to work within the design team. I was able to utilise my pattern making skills from my degree to create designs for upholstery and, with the support of my manager, I was able to learn about traditional upholstery principles. After a couple of years, I progressed to being the Design Manager. In 2015 I put my career on hold for a short time while I started a family, when I returned in 2016 I came back to a very different company after it was sold to Stannah while I was on maternity leave. Juggling two full time jobs (anyone who is a parent will understand this!) was difficult at times but with the support of my work family, I was able to survive. In 2019, I moved into a new role as Manufacturing Group Leader in Commercial Upholstery with a team of 12 people, with my experience working in every department involved I have a very good understanding of what my team can do. At GUS without all of our individual skills and experience, we would not be able to put that extra sparkle into what we do!

Tanya Timms – Marketing and Customer Account Manager

I started working for Stannah almost 20 years ago.  I have always worked in a customer service role from the Telecenter to the Customer Service Department, then spent some time on reception after returning to work after having my twins and then back to sales support. I joined Global Upholstery Solutions three years ago from Stannah originally as an Administrator, I have been there three years and last year I was promoted to my current role as Marketing / Customer Account Manager.

From the International Women’s Day website:

International Women’s Day 2020 campaign theme is #EachforEqual

An equal world is an enabled world.

Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day.

We can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements.

Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world.

Let’s all be #EachforEqual.
